Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about youth Philanthropy and service learning Programs

When can I register for Youth Philanthropy and Service Learning programs?

For the 8th-9th grade program, you’ll register in the summer. For the 10th-12th grade program, you’ll register in the fall. For Service Learning, you can register at any time during the year.

When do these programs start?

  • 8th-9th grade Maryland program starts in October
  • 8th-9th grade Virginia program starts in January
  • 10th-12th grade Maryland and Virginia programs begin in January

  • Service Learning programs run throughout the school year, but you can attend starting at any time

How much is registration?

The 8th-9th grade program in Maryland is $550– a $500 donation to the communal fund and a $50 registration fee. The 8th-9th grade program in Virginia is $300- a $250 donation to the communal fund and a $50 registration fee. The 10th-12th grade program is $300– a $250 donation to the communal fund and a $50 registration fee. The Service Learning program has a $50 registration fee.

Are there scholarships?

Yes! There are need-based scholarships available. Contact judy@jypi.org for more information.

Where do we meet?

For the 8th-9th grade program, 10th-12th grade Maryland program and the Service Learning program, you will usually (but not always) meet close to JYPI’s office, located in the Federation building at 6101 Montrose Road. From there, transportation will be provided to the site visit/Service Learning project. The 10th-12th grade Virginia program will meet at a central Virginia Location, such as Beth Emeth or the JCC of Northern Virginia, and will take transportation from there.

I/my teen will miss one of the Youth Philanthropy sessions. Is that ok?

While it is important to get to as many of the sessions as possible, we understand that sometimes you have other commitments. However, we really recommend that you do not miss more than one session, and it is crucial that you do not miss the Funding Session in April. Also, we do not pro-rate the registration fee if you know you will miss a session.

Who can participate in Youth Philanthropy and Service Learning programs?

We have a Youth Philanthropy program for 8th-9th graders and a program for 10th-12th graders. Service Learning is open to all 8th – 12th graders.

What is the admissions process?

As long as there are spaces available, the Youth Philanthropy program just requires a registration form. Currently, we accept approximately 50 teens in the 8th-9th grade program, 25 teens in the 10th-12th Maryland group and 25 teens in the 10th-12th Virginia group. Space in the Service Learning program is unlimited.

Do I have to be Jewish?

While our Youth Philanthropy programs are only open to Jewish teens, all teens are welcome at our Service Learning programs.

Can I bring a friend?

You can always bring friends to the Service Learning programs. Just let us know first!

Can I participate in the program again?

Usually, teens just participate in the Youth Philanthropy program for just one year- then they’ll go on to participate in alumni programs or in Service Learning. Occasionally, teens will participate in the 8th-9th grade program and then the 10th-12th grade program. Many teens participate in the Service Learning program for multiple years.
